GRANITOIDS OF THE TATRA MTS., WESTERN CARPATHIANS: FIELD RELATIONS AND PETROGENETIC IMPLICATIONS
Abstract
The granitoids of the Tatra Mts. in the Western Carpathians, form a pluton, composed of several types ranging from leucocratic granite and granodiorite to tonalite and diorite. The sheet-like intrusion is accomodated in the upper tectonic unit of an inverted metamorphic sequence. REE-patterns show low fractionation of magma, as well as low differentiation among several types forming the pluton. Chemical composition and physical properties indicate a heterogeneous supracrustal mantle source. Afinity to high-potassium, calc-alkaline, I-type, together with oxidation of magnetite suggest generation through partial melting of older metaigneous material. Fluid-absent melting of muscovite and biotite are suggested as major melting reactions during decompressional uplift, consistent with clockwise P-T-t path in metamorphic rocks. Intrusion into a dextral shear zone, generated during Variscan collision-transpression is proposed as a preliminary model of magma emplacement.
