ASSESSMENT OF THE CERAMIC USES OF CLAYS FROM SOUTHERN SPAIN FROM COMPOSITIONAL, DRYING AND FORMING DATA
Abstract
In this work we assessed the potential uses of the most representative bed layers of the Guadalquivir Basin from their mineralogical and chemical composition, grain size distribution, Rieke and Barna plasticity indices and Nosova drying sensitivity index. For this purpose, we used 10 different samples that are employed by Andalusian ceramic manufacturers. According to the results obtained, six of the samples are suitable for manufacturing red bodies (ceiling and hollow bricks or roofing tiles), whereas the other four are inappropriate for direct uses by ceramic industries. The firing behaviour of the samples was consistent with their compositional, drying and forming data.
